About Us
The Metropolitan Region Northwest Germany, founded in 2006, is one of 11 European Metropolitan Regions in Germany.
Our members are
- 11 counties, five urban municipalities, three chambers of industry and commerce, and the 2 Federal States Bremen and Lower Saxony.
Our aims and tasks
- Support and funding of regional collaborative projects to increase the regional visibility, competitiveness and viability for the future as well as the quality of life,
- Regional cooperation across federal state
boundaries and - Networking.
The Metropolitan Assembly
- Is made up of 70 representatives: six from federal state governments (Bremen and Lower Saxony), 32 from municipalities and 32 from the business community,
- Elects the Steering Committee,
- Adopts strategic objectives, work programmes and resolutions,
- Decides on the appointment and composition of the Metropolitan Assembly and
- Approves the budget.
The Steering Committee/Board
- Is made up of 18 representatives: two from federal state governments (Bremen and Lower Saxony), eight from municipalities and eight from the business community,
- Develops strategic objectives,
- Coordinates and directs content-related work,
- Initiates projects and
- Decides on the type and scope of funding from the Metropolitan Region Northwest’s Development Fund of the Federal States (Bremen and Lower Saxony).
The Working Committees (AK)
Support and assist the Metropolitan Region Northwest in the exchange of knowledge, in the development of the strategic guidelines as well as the selection of the projects to be funded.
Make-Up of the three AKs are:
- AK Economic framework: Consists of representatives of the municipal departments of business development, the chambers of industry and commerce, as well as the federal states.
- AK Energy and Climate Change: Consists of municipal officers for climate change mitigation, representatives of the specialised departments for environmental protection and facility management, representatives of the chambers of industry and commerce, as well as the federal states.
- AK Spatial Structure: Consists of urban and regional planners, representatives of the federal states and regional associations, representatives of nature conservation organisations and the chamber of agriculture.
Our two advisory groups are…
- the parliamentary advisory group with five representatives per federal state (Bremen and Lower Saxony),
- the metropolitan advisory group with 16 representatives from academic und scientific institutions.

The Development Association (Förderverein): "Wirtschaft pro Metropolregion e. V.", which is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Bremen, the IHK for Bremen and Bremerhaven, the IHK Oldenburg and the IHK Stade for the Elbe-Weser Region. It is open to companies and other economic institutions. The overarching aim is to increase the involvement of the business community in regional development. Companies are given the opportunity to contribute their ideas to help strengthen the Northwest region.
